Review: Out Of The Blue, Bandra gets a makeover

When we heard that the decade old, Out of the blue, Bandra is changing management, we were both nervous and excited.

The interiors of the place are changed completely, so has the menu. From a cozy, romantic diner, Out of the blue is now a casual, brightly lit restaurant. A wine cellar on one side and tables spread throughout the outside section, dare we say that the canopy style seating was highly missed.

The menu had sizzlers but they were not available and we hear that they will no longer be available at Out Of The Blue (noooo!). We decided to try out some of the new starters, the Bravia Potatoes topped with smoked sofrito and garlic saffron aioli and the Asian Spring Veggies Bao with sesame seeds, crushed peanuts and lettuce. The Bravia Potatoes were good, we loved the saffron aioli that they were topped with. The Bao however, was bland and no dipping sauce was served with it.

For mains, since sizzlers were not available, we settled for the pizzas and pastas. We tried the Bianco and the Harissa Roasted Pulled Chicken Pizza. No choice of crusts were offered, again, a disappointment. Taste wise, both the pizzas were quite average. The pastas on the contrary were spectacular. The Gnocchi, the Aglio Olio and the Arrabiata Spaghetti.

Coming to the desserts, we tried the Baked Philly Cheesecake and the Kahlua and Baileys Mousse. Again, the desserts were great, cheesecake was smooth, consistent and not grainy. The mousse had a strong flavour of Baileys and that’s why we loved it.

Overall, this new face of Out Of The Blue had some hits and some misses. With a little bit of polishing, we think they might be able to shine as bright as the old one.

P.S. Please bring back the sizzlers or we will be heartbroken!

Review: Sufra

When a place claims their food is authentic, we expect it to be authentic. If we are sold water in a coke bottle, we would definitely have a problem. That’s how we can best describe our experience at Sufra by Moshes.
Having lived in the gulf for over a decade, we definitely can’t go wrong in how an authentic Chicken Shawarma should taste. The Shawarma at Sufra, priced at Rs.150, almost double of the other Shawarma places, was served in a Roti like bread, definitely not pita. The bread was half cooked and most of it got stuck to the paper that it was served in.

Need we say more? Although the flavours were good, but the bread put us off completely, compelling us to trash more than half of it. Opt for Carters Blue Shawarmas or a roll from Maroosh instead and you won’t be disappointed.

Mini Review: Guilt Trip

For those who don’t know, Guilt Trip has been started by one of the ex partners of LSD – Love Sugar Dough, hence our expectations were high. Located right next to Baskin Robbins at Carter Road, Guilt Trip is primarily a cupcake shop but also stocks brownies, macaroons and few other desserts.

We tried the Chocolate Truffle Cupcake and it was quite a disappointment. Sugary, dry and not gooey at all. Priced at Rs.70 we expected much more from it. Let’s hope we have a good enough reason to go back there!

Review: Cuppa Joe

Carter Road has always been the topic of discussion when it comes to small, new eateries. Latest on the block is Cuppa Joe, an initiative by the owners of Escobar. The cafe is located right next to Yogurtbay and has experimented with a couple of new things on the menu.
Divided into two sections, the upper section has an inviting display of desserts and lollipops. The underground section has a small seating area with about 4-5 tables. The highlights of the menu are the Mashmallow Mocha, the Butter Beer and the Red Velvet Cake.
We tried the Chocolate Tart, the Butter Beer, the Walnut Brownie and the Marshmallow Mocha.
The Chocolate Tart was sinful, very gooey and tasted best when heated. The Butter Beer was a complete let down considering the hype created around it. It was a version of the regular coke float, with soda and ice-cream. The Walnut Brownie was passable, not the best we’ve had. But the entire experience was uplifted by the Marshmallow Mocha. A generous amount of marshmallows in your regular mocha coffee. The size of the cup was also quite overwhelming.
Will we go back here? But ofcourse, we love the ambiance and the feel of the place. And we still have to try a big slice of the Red Velvet Cake!

Review: LSD – Love, Sugar, Dough

We were passing the little lane to get to Carter Road when we stumbled upon a tiny colourful eatery which was screaming out to us. LSD – Love, Sugar, Dough is a brand new dessert shop and bakery that sells irresistible desserts and scrumptious baked goods.
Extremely colourful and vibrant, these adjectives describe the interiors of the place and also the display of cupcakes which interestingly has small and large cupcakes with different shades of frosting. Run by Sheeba Hasan – a major in marketing and Tarannum Aziz – a baker since twelve years, this place looks like it has been designed with a lot of love.
Their menu comprises of croissants, sandwiches, breads, toasties, biryanis, beverages, pastries, cheesecakes and cupcakes. Okay, stop drooling! They also customise cupcakes and are soon going to start with cakes.
The highlights of their menu are the ‘Ferrero Rocher Croissant’ and the ‘Sip – a – brownie’ shake! Their cupcakes are also quite delicious and they are definitely giving some tough competition to their very popular neighbour.

Car Free Day at Carter Road

Imagine strolling down the promenade at Carter Road with no cars honking, no teenagers blasting music, no bikers stunting and no wannabes screeching their vehicles!
Yes, that unimaginable day was Sunday, Feb 20, No Car Day or the Car Free Day at Carter Road, an initiative by the KBS (Khar-Bandra-Santacruz) foundation. There were stalls with food, arts and handicrafts, etc displayed. The amphitheater flaunted performances by several popular artists including Sajid-Wajid and Kunal Ganjawala, there were kite flying events, cyclothons, free style dance performances and painting competitions, we felt like we’ve landed in a Mini New York. So lively, so entertaining and so eco-friendly, an effort that deserves an applause, undoubtedly!
Still don’t believe me? Then here are some candid pictures that will make your head spin !
